Ideally, the sensor should be on an interior wall, (a wall which has both sides facing the inside of the house), away from furniture or other objects that can absorb heat, and impact the sensor readings. But if your options are limited, then having the sensor behind furniture would be perfectly fine, as adjusting the temperature of the room for your comfort level is as easy as entering it into your phone.
